Karen Jean Matsko Hood is an author and poet, child advocate and feminist, researcher and educator, cook, and an epicurean writer. She is an experienced teacher and a public speaker who instinctively inspires audiences of all ages through her extensive writings and her strong desire for social justice.

Living in the Inland Northwest presents a multitude of opportunities for both participation and facilitation of charitable events. From book signings to cooking classes, Ms. Hood is a strong supporter of projects that strengthen the local economy as well as educate communities.

Karen Jean Matsko Hood is the founder and CEO of  Whispering Pine Press International, Inc. which publishes a wide genre of family-friendly literature, including cookbooks, poetry, inspirational, children’s and young adult, adoption and foster-family books, scrapbooks, journals, dog and horse-themed materials, and catalogs.

July 2010: “26th Annual Walla Walla Sweet Onion Festival” in Walla Walla, Washington. This family-friendly festival is all about fun! Events include; “Sweet Onion Olympics” on the Courthouse lawn, an onion eating contest, recipe and art contests, games, live music, chef demonstrations, a farmer’s market, and much more. Look for Onion Delights Cookbook by Karen Jean Matsko Hood, as well as other popular cookbooks, children’s books, and poetry published by Whispering Pine Press International, Inc.

 

 

July 2010: “2010 Lentil Festival” in downtown Pullman, Washington. The main event includes a cook-off contest where dishes are judged on appearance, flavor, aroma, texture, and lentil presence. The winning recipes are awarded cash prizes. Entries come from across the country, originating in nearly 40 states.  Lentil Delights Cookbook, written by Karen Jean Matsko Hood, will make its debut at this year’s annual event! Pre-order books for your back-to-school fundraiser now!

October 17, 2009 – Author Book Signing at Hastings Book and Video Store, located at 101 East Best Avenue in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho from 12:00–4:00 p.m. Featuring Halloween Delights Cookbook written by Karen Jean Matsko Hood. Also featured Cooking with Karen demonstrations shown on video by Karen Jean Matsko Hood, to include “Halloween Punch,” a beverage recipe from her cookbook. Guests were invited to sample the punch and buy autographed copies of Halloween Delights as well as two of her other most popular cookbooks, Thanksgiving Delights and Christmas Delights.

August 29, 2009: Author Book Signingat Shadle’s Hastings Book and Video Store, located at 1704 W. Wellesley, Spokane, Washington from 2:00–5:00 p.m.  Autographed copies of Hood's Cookbook Delights Series, poetry, and children's books were available for purchase, including her internationally popular Huckleberry Delights Cookbook.

April 4, 2007:Published in the Spokesman Review by Lorie HutsonSpokane author releases three new cookbooks…Karen Jean Matsko Hood and her publishing company, Whispering Pine Press, have released three new cookbooks: “Coconut Delights,” “Squash Delights,” and “Raspberry Delights.” The books are the latest in her “Delights” series which includes 14 other cookbooks, from “Apple Delights” and “Easter Delights” to “Huckleberry Delights” and “Holiday Gifts-in-a-Jar.”  The books are sold for $19.95 each. The books each contain more than 250 recipes, along with historical facts, folklore and poetry, according to a news release.

    

January 29, 2005: “Devotion to Children, written by Nina Culver, was featured in the Spokesman Review’s Valley Voice. The front-page regional article says: “Through words and actions, Karen Hood wants to make a difference in children's lives.”

January 21, 2005: “Whispering Pine Press Plants Roots, Branches Out, written by Craig Howard, was featured in the Spokane Valley News Herald. The newspaper article featured in the “Arts and More” section explains: “Karen Jean Matsko Hood founder of Whispering Pine Press has authored books on a variety of topics from adopting children to huckleberry recipes.”

June 1, 2005: Published in the Spokesman Review by Lorie Hutson: Local cookbook author Karen Jean Matsko Hood will be signing her “Huckleberry Delights Cookbook,” Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Hastings located at 15312 E Sprague Ave. in Spokane Valley from 3:00–4:30 p.m. The book has more than 250 recipes and includes poetry, history, and folklore on huckleberries.

April 6, 2005: Published in the Spokesman Review by Lorie Hutson: For those who haven’t already started to dream about huckleberry season, here’s your excuse: Local cookbook author Karen Jean Matsko Hood will be signing her Huckleberry Delights Cookbook on Saturday at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main St. The book is 320 pages and is packed with huckleberry recipes, poetry, history, and folklore. Matsko Hood will sign books from 12:30–2:00 p.m. She lives in the Spokane Valley and has written several cookbooks, children’s books and poetry.

December 17, 2005: Author Book Signingat Hastings located at 2512 29th Ave., Spokane, Washington from 1:00–2:30 p.m. Autographed copies of Hood’s Holiday Gifts-in-a-Jar Cookbook were available for purchase.
